Choosing LuMind to work was an easy choice for us…What a wonderful organization that fits into our life perfectly and that is close to our hearts.
On June 4th, 2018, we were blessed with twin boys Martin (DS) and Levi (NT). These guys couldn’t wait to make their entrance into the world so they joined us 5 weeks early. We received confirmation 4 days later that our little Martin was born with an extra chromosome.
Down syndrome (also called trisomy 21) is the most common chromosomal condition in the United States. A chromosomal condition happens when there’s a problem in one or more chromosomes. Chromosomes are the structures that hold genes. Genes are part of your body’s cells that store instructions for the way your body grows and works.
Following the news, we both had a grieving moment for the life we thought we were going to have. Afraid of the unknown and not knowing what the future holds for us, all very scary things for first time parents of twins. When we were told the confirmation about Martin, it wasn’t a positive or beautiful situation. It was met with heavy and fearful hearts.
in the last 10 months of Martin’s life, our outlook has been more of hope, joy,
gratitude and determination. Sure we
have a little extra that we need to do for him. Extra doctor visits, extra therapy sessions,
extra time for him to accomplish things. That’s what makes him our extra special guy
that has shown that there are no limits for Martin!
We spent 31 days in the NICU. The staff was amazing and gave us an outstanding amount of support and resources. They connected us with Down syndrome support groups and another family that was there. We have met an amazing amount of parents who are wonderful advocates for their children!
We feel that working with LuMind is another step in the right direction to help support the research of Down syndrome.
We look forward to see what our future holds and can’t wait to celebrate every inch stone for both of our boys! We are fortunate enough that they have each other for the rest of their lives. What an incredible gift for our whole family!
We are excited to join forces and raise funds for LuMind to help them do the necessary research, and to raise awareness and educate the community about Down Syndrome.
